Shakespeare & Milton Glaser

Jul 09 2012

As a pretty non-webby web designer I usually seek my inspiration away from the intertubes in the more tangible realms of dusty old second-hand book stores. I was down in Brighton a few weeks ago at the Ampersand conference (which I thoroughly enjoyed and recommend BTW) and stumbled across this set of Signet Classic Henry VI books in such a book store (see below).

The first thing we do, let’s kill all the lawyers. — Henry VI, Part 4, 2 .59

The covers were done by Milton Glaser in 1967 and reflect the psychedelic feel of the time. I really love how the quite formal typography works with the simple, half-finished yet colorful illustrations.

There shall be in England seven halfpenny loaves sold for a penny; the three-hooped pot shall have ten hoops; and I will make it felony to drink small beer. — Henry VI, Part 2, 4. 2
